Cooking top sirloin steak on a gas or charcoal grill doesn’t have to be intimidating. Making perfectly grilled top sirloin steak is easy with a little bit of planning.

How Do You BBQ a Top Sirloin Steak?

Nothing can beat a properly cooked juicy steak fresh off the grill. The following guide will teach you how to BBQ top sirloin like a pro.

Step 1: Choose your ideal steaks.

The top three steaks most people choose to grill are filet mignon, ribeye, and top sirloin. Top sirloin is more affordable and can be just as good as more expensive cuts if properly prepared.

Determine how much meat you need and then choose your top sirloin steaks. They should be well-marbled, bright red in color, and around 1 to 1.5 inches thick.

Step 2: Marinate your steaks.

If you make the effort to tenderize your meat, you can turn cheap steak into a mouth-watering treat. Using your favorite marinade, coat your steaks for at least a few hours before cooking in a plastic bag or container.

The acidity of the marinade will help tenderize your meat naturally and give it flavor at the same time!

Do not allow your meat to sit in the marinade longer than 24 hours or the fibers of the meat will break down too much.

Step 3: Prepare your steaks for grilling.

Be sure to remove the steaks from the refrigerator 30 to 60 minutes before grilling so they first reach room temperature. This will help ensure the meat doesn’t contract and become tough during the cooking process.

Pat the meat dry to remove any excess moisture to help you get a picture-perfect, flavor-packed sear.

Step 4: Season your steaks.

Every steak should be seasoned.

If you really want the flavor of your top sirloin to shine, salt and pepper are your best bet. Kosher salt is the best salt option because of its large, flaky crystals and freshly cracked, black-peppercorns will give you the best pepper flavor.

You can also opt for a dry rub with a mixture of your favorite herbs and spices.

Step 4: Prepare the grill.

Use non-stick spray to coat your grill to prevent your meat from sticking. Preheat the grill to high heat (around 500°F) for 15 minutes before adding the steaks.

Step 5: Sear and cook your steaks.

Once your meat kisses the grill, it will begin to sear. Ensure each side is seared for 2 minutes on each side with the lid grill closed to seal in the juice and form a nice crust.

Then you will lower your heat and monitor the internal temp of the steaks for your desired level of doneness.

Medium-Rare130°F
Medium140°F
Medium-Well150°F
Well-Done160°F

Step 6: Let your steaks rest.

Allowing the steak to rest before slicing it will ensure the juice is redistributed throughout the meat fibers so that the final product is a juicy, perfectly-grilled steak!

Wrap the streak in aluminum foil as soon as it leaves the grill, and allow it to rest for 5 to 15 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!

Perfect Grilled Top Sirloin Steak Recipe

Description

Top sirloin is a tender steak with a strong, beefy flavor. This cut of steak has great marbling and a firm bite without excess fat.

Since it’s a relatively tender cut of beef with an excellent beefy flavor, top sirloin steak doesn’t require heavy seasoning.

A quick flash on a grill should produce the perfect medium-rare steak treat that is guaranteed to be the highlight of your next BBQ!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Top Sirloin Steak
  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove minced garlic

Instructions

  1. Purchase your steak. The steak should be 1 to 1.5 inches thick and trimmed neatly of excess fat.
  2. Rub olive oil on both sides of the steak and sprinkle liberally with ground black pepper and kosher salt for seasoning. Rub in your minced garlic.
  3. Before grilling, make sure the meat is at room temperature.
  4. Prepare your grill by getting it very hot for at least 15 minutes. Close the lid until it’s time to put the steak on the grill. You want to get a hard sear from piping hot grill grates that will help the steak retain all the juices.
  5. Use a pair of tongs to place steaks on the grill.
  6. For a good sear, avoid moving the steak for a few minutes. Cooking times will vary depending on your temperature preferences. For the perfect medium rare steak, each side of a one-inch steak should take around 4 to 6 minutes to cook.
  7. When turning your steak, use a pair of tongs instead of a fork. Otherwise, you risk piercing your steak and allowing the juices to escape.
  8. Use an instant-read meat thermometer to get the internal temperature of the steak and time it according to your preference.
A perfect medium rare steak temperature is 130–135 degrees F while the ideal medium steak temperature is 135–145 degrees F.
  9. Let the steak rest. Resting your steak for a total time between 5 and 15 minutes will allow the juices to be re-absorbed and distributed throughout the meat.
  10. Now you have your perfectly grilled top sirloin steak.
It is recommended to top your perfectly cooked steak with chimichurri or compound butter and serve it with your favorite steakhouse sides.
