BBQ sauce

Healthy Homemade BBQ Sauce for Chicken Wings

  • Total Time: 25 minutes

Description

It is surprisingly easy to make homemade BBQ sauce. It takes less than 20 minutes to cook and you only need one pot.

This recipe is absolutely delicious – bold, flavorful, sweet, and spicy!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 tsp olive or coconut oil
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup diced yellow onion
  • 15 ounces can of tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp tamari or coconut aminos
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Stir the mixture frequently and watch the garlic because it can burn.
  2. Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, maple syrup, molasses, apple cider vinegar, tamari, and mustard in a pan and stir to combine.
  3. Add seasonings and spices: salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, chili powder, ground pepper, and cinnamon. Mix well.
  4. Bring mixture to a simmer over medium-low heat and cook for 12-15 minutes, stirring often. Don't let the heat get too high, or the mixture will splatter and boil.
  5. Refrigerate for later use or use right away.

Notes

Replace the maple syrup with powdered or liquid stevia or monk fruit to cut the sugar. Start with a little (like 1/8 teaspoon) and add more until you’re satisfied with the level of sweetness.
